Mark Berent is a well-known author of many Vietnam airwar books and articles. In this article he recounts the people and events that motivated him to write. As he says
"They're out there now, somewhere beyond our eyes, beyond the clouds, rolling and soaring in towering cathedrals flying beautiful airplanes that need only the fuel of their love. These are the men I honor...

Beyond the Clouds Why I Became a Military Writer eBook Mark Berent

My favorite military writer explains why, and a little bit of how, he did it. Here is an excerpt:

" All my characters are composites of people I have known, talked to, or researched in books. Not so the politicians. They are real and all their damning sentences written in the series are words they uttered sometime during their lives. My books might be called works of fiction, but it is thinly disguised historical fiction."

I have a little military experience and listen when military people talk. Mr Berent's books are spot on.

Beyond the Clouds Why I Became a Military Writer eBook Mark Berent Reviews

Excellent read, good author.
I enjoyed this book and led me to have a better appreciation of the books this author turns out. His military career and path to writing is something I found interesting. It is a interesting bio and would I would recommend for those interested in military authors.
I enjoyed reading this article about how an air force pilot became a writer. For anyone who enjoys military history and airplanes, and who wants to hear from real pilots, this article and the 5 novels are good choices.
My father was a wingnut and we were station in Bitburg AFB Germany (among many others). I had the pleasure of being able to see all sorts of aircraft in '74 - '77 at that base. I watched in awe as F4 Phantoms approached the runway with big black clouds of fuel trailing behind as they wobbled to the ground. I saw the first F15 Eagles do a touch and go on Bitburg runway in 76 and pull up and go vertical with afterburners in full duress. I sat in the F15 simulator and envisioned myself as a fighter pilot. So many memories. The one I remember the most were those of my parents prayers (Tony Giannangeli - 72 - eb66) for those that we were neighbors with on those many duty stations during Vietnam...Luke AFB, Pete Field, Tyndall, etc. There was not a night where people such as tanker pilots, eb66 pilots and bomber pilots were not spoken of in high regards. Thanks for the awesome reads and opening back up the corner of my life I had closed off!
This is the most gifted writer I have read of flying during combat. MARK Berent has raised the bar for writers of flying history. His passionate writer to memorialize the combat pilots in Vietnom is to be encouraged every way we can as citizens of our freedom loving country and he doesn't try to minimize the crimes of politicians and generals who dictated in minutiae of an air attack from their safe offices in the rear and in the US. They truth shall set us free.
This book is short and to the point.

For those of you who intent to read his "Wings of War" series please read this first. If you served, especially if you served back in the 60s or 70s, and even if you did not serve in that area of the world you will understand his feelings. Feeling about real life and real events.

I didn't read this short book first but in his "Wings" series I knew exactly what he meant when he referred to arrogant civilian authorities having lunch in DC to pick not only targets but bomb loads and routes. Also understood his scorn for members of the media who trivialized the efforts and high price paid by those serving in our military, just as I felt then and still do. And today I feel that way towards the media with their treatment of those currently serving our Country. I am sure you will recognize the sections of his series relating to the movie female who made broadcasts from Hanoi calling our tortured POWs liars. And those bumper stickers are still in use.

In reading his "Wings of War" series I felt I understood exactly what LTC Berent was feeling. This short book was confirmation.
This is a short bio on the author. At first, I wasn’t impressed but as it continues, I become more involved to the point, I’m going to give his first work on Vietnam a try- “Rolling Thunder.” Based on the description this could be an excellent insight into the meddling on the US Government during this tumultuous war.

I will say this, it’s a completely different type of marketing for an author.

Three stars.
